Look in a mirror. Now, tell me…What do you see?
If you answered anything except, “I see a person created in the image of God,” then you missed it! There is a common saying that says, “We are all children of God,” but that saying is not true. Because the Bible states in John 1:
11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
But, although we are NOT all children of God, we ARE all created in His image. That’s what sets us apart from the rest of creation. That’s what makes us significant, and gives us worth. You and I are people of infinite value. There is something special about each individual. I think it is important to remember that the actions of the individual does not decrease that value one bit. The rapist, the murderer, the drunk driver that kills the innocent victim, and yes, even the child abuser all carry this image.
People can be so insanly inhumane to other people, but their value does not decrease in the mind of God. The gift of Christ at His birth was a gift given to show the worth of the individual. Love is a difficult, costly undertaking. Sometimes love requires us to go beyond what we think we are capable. We are called to love the unloving. But, to express this love you must realize that you carry this image. For the love that we are called to is not expressed without allowing that image to fully develop by taking on its completion…that being Christ…the gift of Christmas.
You have the unlimitless potential to change the world by expressing this love. But, by your own choices, you also have the potential to steal, and kill, and destroy.
